A double rainbow over North Perth Community Garden.

10th Birthday Celebrations

The 29th Oct was a perfect Kambarang day for holding the joint 10th birthday celebrations of Vincent Men’s Shed and North Perth Community Garden. It was an excellent event, well attended by members of the local community and a number of our VIP’s, I’m especially thankful to the new Mayor Alison Xamon for turning up only days after finding out they were elected, along with new deputy Mayor, Alex Castle, and Councillors Suzanne Worner and Nicole Woolf. John Carey attended and spoke about the great things achieved by both organisations.

An interesting talk by Prof Andrea Gaynor on the history of food growing in Australia with special mention to North Perth. Who would have guessed Smith’s Lake had been a Chinese market garden, piggery and the local night soil depot all at the same time – thank god for modern Public Health regulations.

VMS coordinated the BBQ which was enjoyed by all, and the fantastic birthday cake was greatly appreciated. CoV had their FOGO waste stall set up opposite the free coffee cart under the Farmer St Studio’s patio and people could wander in and see all the fabulous art being done in there as well. There were scarecrows made and basil seedlings potted for people to take home, mini tours around the garden & Men’s shed occurred throughout the day.

In all it was a very successful and enjoyable day, made possible with the financial assistance of the City of Vincent.
